Douglass Valley Ranch Lodge (aka The Scout Hut). Before the Academy, this third valley on the property was home to a 1,520 acre homestead owned by Mr. Earl Douglass and Mrs. Nettie Douglass. They operated the acreage as a dude ranch where guests could explore the surrounding area during the day and relax in the evening one the patio or around a rock fireplace in the lodge. Today, three small cabins built in the 1930’s by Leon Snyder and used at one time by ranch guests now serve as the Scout Huts primarily for Scouting America Troops 78 and 79, Cub Scout Pack 80, and Girl Scout USA Troop 3619. The Scout Huts also serve as a “summer home” for Scouting America Troop 77. Photo by Cherie Cayemberg, 2023, used with permission.

Train ‘em, Trust ‘em, Let ‘em Lead! ~William “Green Bar Bill” Hillcourt

Chartered by the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 209, Troop 77 is the largest female ScoutsBSA troop in Colorado.

These girls live by “anything the boys can do, we can do better.” Cold weather wilderness survival training, ice climbing, fishing, watching for meteorites at the Great Sand Dunes, hiking 14’ers, sailing the Florida Keys, canoeing the Canadian border, or llama backpacking near Yellowstone, these girls do it all.

During the summer we meet with our brother troop, Troop 79, at the USAFA Scout Huts on Community Drive. However, since there is not enough room for two large troops to meet inside when it gets cold, during the school year, we meet at the American Legion Post 209 (3613 Jeanine Dr, Colorado Springs)

The oldest Troop on USAFA

Since our founding on the USAF Academy in 1964, over one hundred youth members of Troop 78 have achieved the rank of Eagle. Our program is the same as Lord Baden-Powell’s over a century ago: “A Game with a Purpose”.

Our youth leaders plan outings and activities that are fun, and that teach the Scout skills necessary for advancement. Scouts can hone their skills and earn Merit Badges just by participating in our regular outings.

Troop 78 is an active Troop. An overnight event is planned for almost every month of the year (even in the winter). We have Troop equipment for both car-camping as well as back-country adventure, and participate in Philmont Winter Adventure and summer treks. We do a high-adventure trek each year, with a Philmont summer trek once every two or three years for Scouts ages 14 years and older. Some past treks have been a Green River (Canyonlands) 52-mile canoe trip, and a Sea Base adventure in the Florida Keys.

Aloha Ready

Chartered by the American Legion Post 209. We develop leaders through leadership experiences. Troop 79 is a “Scout-led Troop” in the model that Sir Baden Powell devised more than a century ago. Anyone who desires will get the opportunity to lead. We offer “in-hut” leadership training to help prepare scouts for any leadership role.

We take adventure trips. Troop 79 has been on a remote river canoe trip down the mighty Missouri, white water rafting, snow skiing, rock and ice climbing, sailing on Lake Pueblo and motor boating and water skiing. Each of these experiences is tied to earning Scout merit badges or exposure to new skills.

The Eagles Club and Crew 1954
