Before the Academy, this third valley on the property was home to a 1,520 acre homestead owned by Mr. Earl Douglass and Mrs. Nettie Douglass. They operated the acreage as a dude ranch where guests could explore the surrounding area during the day and relax in the evening one the patio or around a rock fireplace in the lodge. Today, three small cabins built in the 1930\u2019s by Leon Snyder and used at one time by ranch guests now serve as the Scout Huts primarily for Scouting America Troops 78 and 79, Cub Scout Pack 80, and Girl Scout USA Troop 3619. Our program is the same as Lord Baden-Powell\u2019s over a century ago: \u201cA Game with a Purpose\u201d.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our youth leaders plan outings and activities that are fun, and that teach the Scout skills necessary for advancement. Scouts can hone their skills and earn Merit Badges just by participating in our regular outings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Troop 78 is an active Troop. An overnight event is planned for almost every month of the year (even in the winter). We have Troop equipment for both car-camping as well as back-country adventure, and participate in Philmont Winter Adventure and summer treks. We do a high-adventure trek each year, with a Philmont summer trek once every two or three years for Scouts ages 14 years and older. We develop leaders through leadership experiences. Troop 79 is a \u201cScout-led Troop\u201d in the model that Sir Baden Powell devised more than a century ago. Anyone who desires will get the opportunity to lead. We offer \u201cin-hut\u201d leadership training to help prepare scouts for any leadership role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>We take adventure trips. Troop 79 has been on a remote river canoe trip down the mighty Missouri, white water rafting, snow skiing, rock and ice climbing, sailing on Lake Pueblo and motor boating and water skiing.
